About the Event

The UK government has set a target of net zero carbon emissions by 2050. Homes contribute to 27% of current greenhouse gas emissions making sustainable retrofit a critical part of meeting our zero carbon target. Of the 24 million homes in the UK, around 8 million are classified as ‘hard to treat’, pre 1930’s, and fall outside of the standard upgrade guidance and incentives.

.

The aim of this project is to take two typical ‘hard to treat’ Victorian townhouses and prove they can meet the world's highest performance standards set by the Passivhaus Institute without compromising the building's heritage. Mixing British architectural history with the most advanced and environmentally-friendly materials, the properties are intended to revolutionise occupants’ lifestyles.

.

Designed to incur zero energy bills, these exemplar homes remain comfortable and warm year-round without a central heating system. The team exceeded Passivhaus requirements with a focus on reducing embodied energy and a petrochemical-free building fabric.

.

The Zetland Passive House project is intended as a valuable case study to inspire others and share vital information on how it can be achieved. We have partnered with dozens of sustainable manufacturers, professionals, and artisans whose work is on display in the house.

.

This project has been featured on the BBC, Passive House+ Magazine, House Beautiful, Architecture Today, RIBA Journal, and the Telegraph, amongst other publications.

.
