Project Type:

Team:
Status:

Wirral

Services Offered:

This beautiful Grade II listed lodge sits in the heart of Wirral's historic Birkenhead Park. Built in the 1840-1850's, this retrofit aims to be the first certified EnerPHit retrofit of a listed building in the UK.

After falling into a state of disrepair for a number of years, the current owners have ambitious plans to restore and retrofit the lodge to provide a case study for the low energy and sustainable refurbishment of listed buildings. Ecospheric has worked closely with the client and architects Progress in Practice to carry out energy modelling, Passivhaus design, as well as building services design.

The project has recently passed a major milestone having been granted listed planning consent in March 2024.

Ecospheric is continuing to support the client by carrying out further energy and carbon modelling as part of a research project delivered in partnership with the University of Liverpool's School of Architecture and Wirral Council. This research study titled "Preserving the Past for the Future" will involve the creation of a case study about Central Lodge and other listed historic buildings. The case studies will provide real world examples to support the development of a methodology for policy and technical guidance for retrofitting heritage buildings subject to preservation policies.
